Pinot: For people that don’t know you, do you think you could sum up your sound in three words?
Jamie Grind: Energetic, nostalgic, bouncy – a bit like dropping a pill, but with little to no comedown.
P: In terms of production who’s your biggest influence and what sets them apart from everyone else?
JG: Influences range from hip hop, garage, bassline, grime, dubstep, house and techno with no real particular focus on any of those… Apparently I’m ‘future garage’ though?? I couldn’t just pick one person who has influenced me, I’d like to think my style is just a culmination of all the different types of music I’ve enjoyed over the years. People like RZA, Low Deep, Todd Edwards, 2562, Martyn, TRG, Dem2 and loads of others…
P: You’re based in Leeds, a pretty healthy city in terms of house and electronic music. Was it hard to come through in a busy scene? Or did your style fill a gap that was needed?
JG: I just enjoy making music, so I’m not really looking to do anything else than keep on doing what I’m doing and put out some records along the way, if someone actually buys one then ’ a bonus!
P: So technicals. Do you still use the same set up you started with? If not how has it changed?
JG: For the past couple of years I’ve been using Logic 8 on an Imac. My set-up is fairly rustic, a cheap midi keyboard, some wharfdale speakers and a Yamaha MW12 mixing desk… Definitely could benefit from an upgrade but it does the job for the time being.
P: You’ve just had a release on Spatial’s label Infrasonics. How did you link up with Spatial?
JG: Just by exchanging tunes over the web – I sent ‘If You Want’ to a few people and got a pretty good response, a couple of labels offered to release it and Infrasonics seemed like the best move.
P: So what’s next for Jamie Grind then?
JG: I’ve got a 4 track 12″ EP coming out on Fortified Audio next, and got a few other bits that should could be surfacing pretty soon. I’m also going to dropkick Bono live on TV one day so watch out for that shit.
‘If You Want’ Is out now on Infrasonics. Also check his March mix (below).
