For the first Bass Ache podcast we’ve drafted in head of the always brilliant Well Rounded Records, Donga. Donga resides in brighton and when he’s not managing his label fabled for their hybrid sound, he’s creating beats and working on collab projects such as Ultrasound.

Q. About the mix, what thoughts did you put into the tracks you selected and the order of doing so?
A. To be honest if I do too much planning or work out mixes I tend to get stupidly perfectionist and it stops being fun. To keep me on my toes I tend to just grab a bunch of things I’ve recently been diggin, hit record and hope for the best! With this one 3 of the first 4 tracks were bought earlier the same morning at a boot sale just yards from my house for 50p each which accounts for them being in there! It’s just going with your instincts and the mood of the moment I guess. Oh and I might’ve put more label exclusives in but I’m 100% vinyl and have to wait for the wax. I probably should do something about that.
Q. Well rounded have released some quality 12″s lately from the likes of Dead Boy and Hackman among others, and have constantly shown your eye for talent, so who do you have coming for us next?
A. The next few releases will be a no-nonsense 4 tracker of garage from C.R.S.T, the epic ‘Hold it down’ by Submerse and a wicked 4 tracker by Skinnz which sits right in the middle of house, garage and dubstep, some of it’s really fresh and colourful and others tracks mysterious and spacey. Beyond that Littlefoot, xxxy, Kidkut, Hodge and some samplers if all goes to plan. And the 2nd Donga & Blake may be a bit of a winner I hope!
Q. Whats the future for Well Rounded, heading into 2011?
A.2011 is too far away. I’ve got so much to try to do with the rest of this year. Hopefully people will want to buy the records and it will enable us to continue as far as possible
Q. So your and Blake’s 12″ came out recently and was straight on outlets like Juno and Phonica’s featured list. How did working with blake on this track work?
A. Myself and Blake have been making tunes for a while, more evenly balanced collaborations. The 2 originals on the EP (there’s also a remix by Geiom) were both virtually done by Blake without me but the contributions I made seemed to complete them. We knew the tunes were quite subtle but I don’t wanna hear bangers all night. So we put em out there.
Q. Whats the future plans for your own projects?
A. With my own stuff I guess i’ll put bits out when I believe in them. Am working on some stuff with my friend Richter as Chirm and doing more bits with Blake. I’d like to do more stuff with Chaos and Richter as Ultrasound too. We used some cool hardware. Turning knobs and making mad sounds is well fun. And Chaos understands both Jackin’ and Jazz which is pretty cool! The main other plan is the Well Rounded night which launches at Jam, Middle Street, Brighton on Sat July 24th with myself, Deadboy, Doc Daneeka and Unlikely B2B Dom. We’re going to really try to cross and unite various styles and bring some serious vibes to the dancefloor.
Buy Donga and Blake’s Grown Ups EP, supported by XXXY, Martin Kemp, Doc Daneeka and more!
