To those who aren’t aware of Deniz Kurtel, hopefully this will give you a nice little insight. Deniz is a live DJ, LED visual and production artist working closely with the Wolf + Lamb family. Her productions and remixes have been supported by the likes of Jamie Jones, Seth Troxler and Damian Lazarus. Her remix of ‘Fables and Fairytales’ gained a lot of attention from DJ’s and producers alike, I caught Deniz live in Bristol a couple of months ago and this tune was by far the standout in her set.
I recently caught up with Deniz to discuss future plans, her light show, the Wolf + Lamb family. Here’s what she had to say..
What projects are you working on at the moment?
Right now I’m working on the artwork for my album that’s coming out on Crosstown Rebels and making the final edits for the CD version of the tracks, and working on a couple of remixes.. I’m also building a new LED installation for my mother’s art festival in Turkey.
You started out with LED visuals before producing music right? how did you get into producing?
A lot of my friends were making music and I just wanted to give it a shot.. It started off pretty casually and then I started having a lot of fun with it and doing it full time.
Do you feel your visuals go hand in hand with your music?
Not all of my work, but definitely the piece I built for my live set. I actually programmed it in a way that it responds to my music. There is a short explanation on how it works in this video:
What influences you?
Music, and for my LED projects I think I’m mostly inspired by nature.
You toured with Crosstown Rebels earlier this year, How did you find that experience?
It was my first time playing so I was a bit nervous, but it was great touring with people I know and not alone as my first experience because it definitely made things easier and more fun. And I feel like hearing my music through bigger sound systems has helped my production.
I heard that you stole the show at Fabric in London, playing a club with so much history, was it a nervous moment?
Fabric was amazing. It was the second time I performed with my LED set up, which is a lot of pressure because it takes a really long time to set up and get it perfectly working with the sound and everything. So there were a few difficulties during set up and it was a lot of work, but they were so helpful and professional in every step that it made the whole thing really easy and smooth and a pleasure in the end. The sounds was also incredible, needless to say.
How is living in the Marcy with the Wolf + Lamb family?
Gadi and I have been gone for a few months actually, and rented the downstairs out so we really miss it. No Regular Play still lives upstairs. We’re planning to spend most of the winter in Miami with Soul Clap for the dates that we’re touring in the U.S. and go back to the Marcy for NYE.
What are your plans for the rest of 2010?
I’m supposed to start touring for my album in a few months, which will probably keep me busy till the end of the year. I will probably start working on a new album at some point soon. Also looking for a bigger studio space for a couple of new art projects I have in mind.
