Wolf + Lamb vs Soul Clap DJ-Kicks Review & Interview

January 22, 2011 Carl Hiett 5 Comments

Soul Clap and Wolf + Lamb are no strangers to us at Bass Ache and they’re next in line for the DJ Kicks series on !K7 records; a long running mix series which has seen the likes of Carl Craig, Fout Tet, Kode9, James Holden and many more at the helm.

Soul Clap are a duo which consist of Eli Goldstein and Charles Levine from Boston, US. Best known for their RnB re-edits, YoYoYo 90′s jam, sexy deep house DJ set’s and all round fun. They have a number of productions and remixes to date which include 2010′s excellent ‘Extravaganza’ on Wolf + Lamb black label. I featured the guys when they gave away a free EP last year, which you can still get here.

‘Always pushing new boundaries, always traveling time and space, Soul Clap truly is the Great White Hope.’

Soul Clap – Extravaganza

Wolf + Lamb are Gadi Mizrahi & Zev Eisenberg. They have carved a very organic house sound out of New York, downtempto, deep and moody. They have become an institution in electronic dance music over the last decade, they started a hotel in Brooklyn called ‘The Marcy’ and now having 3 labels: Wolf + Lamb, Wolf + Lamb Black label and Gadi’s vinyl only Double Standard.

Wolf + Lamb – If U Had (Shaun Reeves Edit)

You get more than just two DJ duo’s with these guys, you get a group of good friends and definitely a good party.

You will find many exclusives on this CD, with production work from W+L regulars Deniz Kurtel, Greg Paulus, Slow Hands and of course Zev and Gadi, Eli makes his solo debut whilst Charles is on production and vocal duty. Ben Westbeech better known as Breach lays down vocal’s on ‘In The Park’ by SECT, something I hope will see the light of day after this mix is out.

The mix is slow, sexy, superbly programmed and you get a feel this was a reflection of the after hours parties at The Marcy. A consistent flow of fresh beats, melody and rhythm. With the four guys coming together for this mix I jumped at the opportunity to throw some questions there way..

How and where was the mix recorded?

This mix was made on the couch in our Miami house, during breaks between playing ping-pong and swimming.

Four DJ’s making one mix CD is quite unique, how did you find that experience?

So much of what we do is collaborative anyway, from productions to label experiences to cooking dinner, we’ve all been working together for almost 2 years and that made it really natural to pull everything together. We know each others strengths and weaknesses so each of us took on rolls: writing new tracks, compiling music from friends, mixing, editing and mastering. Then once we got in the ring, Gadi gave Charlie a pile driver and Eli had to retaliate by hitting Zev in the head with a steel chair. Blood was flying everywhere!

How would you describe your sound on the mix? Does it reflect that of the parties at The Marcy Hotel?

The mix is a direct reflection of what the Marcy feels like. Chilling in your living room with the morning sun shining through the skylight and 50 of your closest friends dancing and hanging out. STD (sexy, tender and deep). Get yo’self checked out : )

Where do you draw your influences from?

Freestyle, Uncle Luke, Miami sunshine, food truck roundups and Modern Family.

Soul Clap and Wolf + Lamb parties have been very successful in the UK. Are there plans for any in 2011?

No. We’re never coming back…
But, seriously we’re going to be doing a few DJ Kicks tour dates in April, there’s plans for a bigger variety show with the whole crew sometime over the summer and we’ll be doing more YoYoYo 90′s Jams… and that’s just in London.

2010 was a very good year for SC / W+L releases, can we expect the same flow in 2011?

Between Wolf + Lamb, Wolf + Lamb Black and Gadi’s vinyl only label, Double Standard there should be about 8 releases in the next 6 months. Greg Paulus from NRP will be kicking things off with a solo EP on W+L, complete with a Crazy Penis remix, Double Standard has the Crew Love remixes (also of Greg) and an EP from a new artist called Double Hill (we like to call it the double double) and then Black Label has edits coming from Jonny Rock and W+L themselves. Then The Clap is working on their debut album coming late summer (also on W+L), plus a bunch of dope remixes.

What were your highlights of 2010?

Living the lie, cheating death, Bar25 closing, Ph?, The Electric Pickle, Yo 90′s Rave Jam, Michelberger Hotel and making lots of lists.

Can you all pick one tune that has been a staple in your DJ sets?

Right now..

Charlie: Giorgio Moroder – The Chase
Eli: Julio Bashmore – Everyone Needs A Theme Tune
Gadi: Robert Owens ft. Larry Heard – Art
Zev: Cesar – Who Edit

Lastly, can you pick any DJ’s or producers to watch out for in 2011?

Voices Of Black, Tanner Ross, Double Hill, Greg Paulus, Slow Hands, Miguel Campbell, Julio Bashmore.
