After a delay in March’s podcast, 009 comes from relatively new producer My Panda Shall Fly. MPSF is about to release his debut EP on Growing Records, an off-shoot of the mighty Wichita Recordings. The mix it self is packed with tracks from bass heavy weights, including Hessle stalwarts Ramadanman / Pearson Sound and Blawan, as well as dubstep-techno pioneer 2562 plus MPSF originals and remixes.
I’m sure you’re going to hear a lot of MPSF once the EP drops, his interesting synth work and bass compositions are certainly more left of field as far as trends in current UK bass music goes, but it’s definitely going to please those into the experimental side of bass music and beyond. Listen to the podcast, and check the record out next week.
Tracklist:
1. MJ Cole – Hawaii
2. Pirate Soundsystem – Dub N U (My Panda Shall Fly Version)
3. Pearson Sound – PLSN
4. My Panda Shall Fly – Yoyo (Pirate Soundsystem Remix)
5. Blawan – Iddy
6. Hyetal – Like Silver
7. My Panda Shall Fly – Xerox
8. DJ Spinn – I Really Feel
9. 2562 – Who Are You Fooling?
10. My Panda Shall Fly – Freq
11. Ramadanman – Don’t Change For Me
12. My Panda Shall Fly – Injury (Nightwave Remix)
The Sri Lankan-born visual artist and producer, armed with an alarmingly large beard and a bundle of compelling remixes, gained a lot of attention within the Dubstep and Future Bass communities.
MPSF recently finished work on his debut EP, the politely named ‘Sorry I Took So Long’, a nod to having never recorded any material with the live electronics trio, which was My Panda Shall Fly in an earlier form. But it’s been well worth the wait: these three songs navigate the boundaries of Future Bass as we know it. “With my latest tracks I’m trying to explore something different. It’s still bass-heavy, but much slower and sparser than the classic wobble sound” the 23-year-old humbly states. But it’s much more than that.
The EP kicks off with ‘Injury’, a synth-driven, percussion-heavy, effervescent slow burner with a slight Detroit feel. ‘Xerox’ sounds like a baked Nintendo Gameboy gone astray at a South London warehouse party. Then ‘Yoyo’ finally draws the curtain with a wobbly organ bass line pillowed against eccentric Dub-wise rhythms. The snare loses itself in echoes, the orchestra of sounds melt into silence – My Panda Shall Fly has taken off.
The package comes complete with a slew of remixes from UK bass producers, Throwing Snow, Pirate SoundSystem, DoReMi, Nightwave aka 8bitch and Dam Mantle.
Sorry I Took So Long is out 11th April on Growing Records.
