Bass Ache Podcast 013: Dwindle

October 5, 2011 Carl Hiett No Comments

Bass Ache podcast 013 comes after a short break but trust me it delivers a tasteful selection of house, techno and garage music. We have drafted in one of the forthcoming guests from the Bass Ache room at the Bristol In:Motion series this weekend, Dwindle. He is a DJ based in London, producing neatly crafted house and garage music. We caught up with Dwindle ahead of his appearance at Motion for a chat about the mix, DJing, productions and London.

Right first of all.. For those that don’t know about you, can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Yeah no worries. I’m Robin, I produce and DJ as Dwindle. I make music I suppose you would slot in the bass music category. I like to call it just house and garage but others would probably disagree. I’ve been based in Bristol and across the south west for the last 8 years or so but just moved to London.

How are you finding the move to London? People say Bristol has everything London has but on a smaller and closer scale.. Especially in the underground music scene.

Yeah definitely. I absolutely love Bristol and the size of it really suited me well. Thought it was time for a change though. It’s still a very special place for me and luckily I still have a lot of ties there and go up regularly for gigs and to see friends so don’t feel too far away. London’s cool, I’m still just finding my feet here really. I did grow up here but that was in West and now basically everything is East. Looking forward to getting more stuck in though and hopefully linking up with some promoters and other producers here in the not too distant future.

Yeah I have to agree everything is East, I lived in West last year and it was a pain on the night buses / tubes after a party…

Literally, the amount of time I spend on the Piccadilly line is unreal….

How did you get into DJing, producing and electronic music?

Well I started DJing really young and got my first set of decks for my 13th birthday. At the time I was really into happy hardcore (don’t laugh!) and jungle. From there I suppose I’ve really just followed what they call the ‘hardcore continuum’ through drum and bass, garage, dubstep and now house and techno too. I started producing about 6 years ago but have only really been taking it seriously for the last 2 years and only producing as Dwindle since beginning of 2011.

Haha. I like your honesty about the happy hardcore, everyone has their moments eh?

Haha. Yeah. It made sense at the time.

So you’ve done this mix for us at Bass Ache, how and where was the mix recorded?

Just recorded at home in my studio on vinyl and cd’s. I’m pretty old skool.

Simple setup is always the most effective.. Did you have a plan for the mix? or just go with the flow?

Yeah I really like putting mixes together and I’m all about the flow so I like to spend little time planning and putting a tracklist together. Pretty much first attempt on the record though.

We have you down for the Bass Ache / Bugged Out! party this Saturday, we’re hyped! Are you looking forward to it? What can we expect from a Dwindle club set?

Really on it. Gonna be a sick night! Well most of my sets are in the same vain to this mix so the first half is more house/techno orientated 4/4 stuff and then second half I like to get a bit more murky and bring in tougher garagey beats, baselines and raise the BPMs and energy. Depending on the crowd I like to usually squeeze in a few old skool bits, a few of my own tunes and ideally a bit of grime!

Sounds perfectly suited to our room, we do love an old grime banger… You spoke a bit about your production. What can we expect in the coming months? I played ‘One To The Other’ out on Saturday, was vibing to that one!

Wicked man. Glad to know you’re liking it! Well I’ve just finished a couple of new ones. One is ‘Replika 5′ which is the first tune in the mix. The other’s called ‘Tribal Frog’ and is on my Soundcloud. I’ve got a batch of tunes together now that I’m reasonably happy with so I’d like to try and get some stuff signed soon. Other than that just keep on it really. My tempos have dropped so doing quite a lot of stuff around the 125 BPM mark at the moment which is interesting for me as I’ve never really listened to that much house so kind of approaching it without any pre-conceived ideas.

Sounds good Robin, we’ll definitely be keeping watch on your production work. Where can we find your online presence? you mentioned Soundcloud…

Yeah soundcloud.com/musicdwindles is the Soundcloud. I’ve been trying to get a bit more on the self-promo tip recently as well and have finally got on Twitter and set up a Facebook page. Need to remember to use them though.

Needs to be done in this modern age… Anything else you would like to add?

No I think that’s about it. Hope people enjoy the mix and getting down to Motion on Saturday for some fire at Bugged Out! It’s highly recommended.

Thanks for chatting to us Robin, we’ll see you on Saturday!

Catch Dwindle alongside Untold, Pariah and Bass Ache DJs this Saturday at Motion Skatepark in Bristol.
