JD, Joseph Hines, Le Piscine

The long-standing partnership between Red Bull Music Academy and Brixton’s Plan B continues on March 31st with huge house session south of the river. The inimitable Kerri Chandler will be performing an ‘All Night Long’ 7 hour set in the main room, a rare treat in such an intimate space. Headlining in the basement will be one half of Belgian house duo FCL and white-hot one-to-watch San Soda, Red Bull Music Academy alumni (Barcelona 2008).

Few in the industry can rival the artistic reputation and career longevity of Kerri Chandler. With an unfathomable back catalogue, he has been an essential producer for over 20 years, carving out his own place at the forefront of club culture. Effortlessly blending old and new sounds, Kerri’s prolific output has found it’s way on to countless credible imprints including Shelter, Mad House and King Street Sounds to name but three. Not just turning up to spin but commandeering the booth for the whole night is set to be very special occasion.

Belgian duo San Soda and Red D (also known as FCL) have been turning heads all over Europe with their refreshing brand of house music. Releasing under the aptly named ‘We Play House’ label, their sometimes deep always soulful productions have caught the attention of discerning house lovers across the globe. Deservingly winning nods of approval from all the right places, San Soda has gone on to earn high profile bookings at the likes Fabric, Panorama Bar and Sonar.

Since it’s inception in 1998, Red Bull Music Academy has established itself as one of the most unique projects in music. Each year, the Academy takes over an inner city space, transforming it into a bespoke venue for musical innovation where aspiring music makers from all over the over the world are joined by pioneering legends to learn about everything from music history to technology. Previous lecturers have included Bootsy Collins, Nile Rogers, Carl Craig, Bob Moog, Steve Reich, Erykah Badu and the Mizell Brothers as well as more recent successes such as MIA, Oneohtrix Point Never, Peaches and Magnetic Man’s Skream.

The Academy have all of their fingers and toes very firmly on the pulse, taking great interest in global underground music scenes, popping-up at only the most vital music festivals as well as curating their own legendary events. 2011 saw RBMA present a showcase at Barcelona’s Sonar festival, dominate Notting Hill Carnival with their annual Major Lazer throwdown and take over the London Eye for a music festival in the sky, programming the 30 pods with 30 live gigs and broadcasting to the world via redbullmusicacademyradio.com

We’re very excited to be visiting Plan B again for our next installment. A 500 capacity gem complete with Funktion 1 sound in two acoustically treated rooms with a raw, stripped back interior. Expect intimate vibes and a serious soundsystem!
The highly anticipated third album from Paul Rose aka Scuba is to be released next Monday and the nice guys at Hot Flush Recordings have put it online in it’s entirety for your aural pleasure. It’s the follow up to ‘Triangulation’ which was released in 2010 and carries on in the same form as his highly successful ‘Adrenalin’ EP from 2011.

On the 27th February, Scuba will release his third album through Hotflush. Entitled ‘Personality’ and featuring 11 brand new tracks, it takes in a wealth of genres across contemporary dance music, proving once again Scuba’s place at the cutting edge of the electronic music scene. Preceding his LP will be ‘The Hope’; pushing on from the tense atmospherics of previous Scuba material, the single fizzes with claustrophobic bass pressure and menacing narration. Backed by an exclusive non-album cut ‘Flash Addict’, ‘The Hope’ will proceed the album on the 6th February.

Originally from London, Scuba relocated to Berlin in 2007, and released his debut album, ‘A Mutual Antipathy’ in 2008. The stylistic synergy of the album cemented his position as one of the most forward-thinking producers to emerge from the London bass scene. In the same year, Scuba founded the massively successful SUB:STANCE night at the legendary Berlin club Berghain. SUB:STANCE has since launched in New York with a look to expanding further in 2012.

Scuba’s second album, ‘Triangulation’, was released on Hotflush in early 2010, joining the likes of Mount Kimbie, Sepalcure, Joy Orbison, Untold, Sigha and George Fitzgerald on its enviable roster.

With ‘Personality’ due for imminent release and plans for a live show in the works, Paul Rose’s constantly developing world seems set to keep on turning in 2012.

Release/catalogue number: HFCD007

Recent collaborators with Blawan, The Analogue Cops are set to release a new EP on Out-ER (Out Electronic Recordings) later this month. As the name of the duo suggests, they are lovers of analogue hardware, producing dance music reminiscent of the late 80s.

This 4 track 12″ serves up a warm slice of raw chicago influenced house music. A1 jacks like they did way back when, A2 sends you on a journey of floating hypnotism whilst B2 has excellent rave chords to get the floor moving, B2 is a low swung number to round off a hotly tipped EP from the berlin based italian duo.

It’s quite right that The Analogue Cops have attracted a bit of attention recently for their productions, the superb Restoration imprint and collaborative efforts with Ryan Elliot and Blawan. Staunch vinyl addicts, the Italian duo have been creating music that retains the spirit of disco, Chicago house and Detroit techno beautifully.

OUT-ER, a relatively new imprint that has so far themed it’s releases by colour (Black and Yellow, so far) and made all the right noises in terms of DJ support, delivers the latest EP from The Analogue Cops in November ‘The Purple EP’.

Comprising four tracks of warm, drum machine driven cuts with a throbbing analogue heart, ‘The Purple EP’ is another addition to the already superb discography of Marieu & Lucretio.

Blawan is back with a second single on the long established R&S records, it’s probably one of his best efforts to date, up there with ‘Getting Me Down’ released a few months back.

Expect more acid tinged house and techno from the Yorkshire lad, ‘What You Do With What You Have’ is mindfully twisted but carefully crafted acid techno, whilst Blawan brings the tempo down on ‘Vibe Decorium’ for this haunting piece of acid house.

Blawan returns to R&S with a superb new single.

What You Do With What You Have is another step up for the young producer, following the Bohla EP and his huge Getting Me Down white label. It takes a fundamental message from some KDJ spoken word and twists it through submerged acid lines, trademark driving percussion and classic techno stabs. The way he works the vocal is amazing, and validates the fact that “It ain’t what you got, it is what you do with what you have.”

Vibe Decorium on the flip is another twisted piece of acid house put through the Blawan blender, marking him out as one of the best producers around right now. As Mary Anne Hobbs says ‘He really is my favourite producer of the moment’. She has played What you Do… four weeks in a row ‘It is just such an inspired, raw and primal piece of work’.

Tracklist:

A. What You Do With What You Have
AA. Vibe Decorium

R&S records will release ‘What You Do With What You Have/Vibe Decorium’ by Blawan on October 3rd.

A brand new label from Huxley and Jimmy Posters is launching next month, with a 3 track 12″ from Ethyl & Huxley. ’3 Feet High’ is a groove led jacking house track, backed with 2 remixes from noneother than German don Roman Flügel.

Saints & Sonnets is the new imprint from producer Huxley and journalist/dj Jimmy Posters, and it debuts with ‘3 Feet High’ from Ethyl & Huxley backed with remixes from Roman Flugel.

A chance meeting at a Berlin after-party and the subsequent musical discussions planted the seed for Saints & Sonnets – a label dedicated to the full spectrum of quality house music. The pairing of a talented, hugely prolific producer and an equally productive critic/writer is an enticing prospect for label management and the roster of 001 is the icing on the cake.

‘3 Feet High’ sees the Hertfordshire-born duo of Ethyl & Huxley turn in a powerful, rounded deep house cut that uses contrasting brute-force bass and light melodies to brilliant effect. The layering of jacking, shuffled subs and FM bass makes for and incredibly weighty base to a track but the additions of superb rhythmic breaks, arrangement tweaks and subtle string and chord samples make ‘3 Feet High’ an excellent judged piece of house.

Roman Flügel, a producer that needs little introduction, extends an incredibly rich run of form with two excellent interpretations of ‘3 Feet High’. Much like his recent EP for Dial, Flügel’s remixes of ‘3 Feet High’ are the epitome of 21st Century house. Gently perverting classic deep house aesthetics the Darmstadt-born producer threads his beautiful house interpretations with oddball synth work and pacing. Whether you opt for the dub feel of ‘Mix 2’ or the straighter house vibe of digital-only ‘Mix 1’, there’s no doubt this is a master class in remixing.

‘3 Feet High’ by Ethyl & Huxley is released on Saints & Sonnets early October 2011.
